What Amazon Rufus Means for Pet Brands in 2026

If you’re already selling your pet products on Amazon or considering doing so, it’s important to learn about Amazon Rufus, Amazon’s generative AI shopping assistant. As well as using the traditional method of the Amazon Search Box to find pet products, potential customers can now use Rufus instead to find what they’re looking for.

What is Amazon Rufus?

A generative AI shopping assistant developed by Amazon that uses COSMO AI (Common Sense Knowledge Generation and Serving System) to analyse a buyer's intent and make recommendations based on their questions.

What Does This Mean for Pet Product Sellers on Amazon?

This new way of product searching signals a move away from an algorithm that works just on face value keywords and one that also assumes intent and meaning. Using Rufus, pet parents can perform a variety of functions and searches that they couldn’t previously do when using the Amazon Search Box.

Potential customers can use Rufus to:

  • Compare different products - e.g., Compare Royal Canin to PRO PLAN dog food

  • Find information about reviews - e.g., What are the highest-rated dog foods on Amazon?

  • Ask for details about a product - e.g., Is this dog food hypoallergenic?

  • Get product recommendations - e.g., What is the best dog food for a whippet?

Is Amazon Rufus Available in the UK?

Yes, Amazon Rufus AI was first launched in the US and then introduced to the UK in September 2024. You can use Rufus on the Amazon mobile app or on desktop.

Where Can I Find Rufus?

You must first be signed into your Amazon account to use the Amazon Rufus chatbot. The Rufus logo appears in the top left hand corner of your page, once you click on this icon, a chat window will appear on the left of the screen.

Is Rufus Free to Use?

Yes, it is completely free to use.

What Is the Amazon Rufus Dog?

The AI shopping assistant was aptly named after a Welsh Corgi named Rufus that belonged to two early employees of Amazon. They brought their dog to work with them and he became well known around the office, becoming something of a company mascot and even featuring in old Amazon social media posts.

Rufus the dog sadly died in 2009 but his legacy lives on with his namesake now being used for Amazon’s latest AI shopping assistant.

Do People Use Amazon Rufus UK?

Amazon published figures quoting that Rufus was used by over 250 million users all over the world in 2025. Awareness of the chatbot in the UK is much lower with 26% of shoppers aware of it in 2025 however this figure is likely to grow in the coming years.

Rufus will not be replacing the Amazon Search Box and is used as an add-on that potential customers can use to search for products instead. For this reason, as a pet product seller it’s important to wear two hats and not focus all your energy on Rufus.

This means your listings should have a mix of traditional SEO methods for customers who are using the Amazon Search Box, which works on face value keywords and content that is optimised for Rufus.

How to Optimise Your Pet Product Listings: A Crash Course in Amazon Rufus

The best way to optimise your pet product listings for Rufus is to do the research and put yourself in the shoes of your potential customers. Log into your Amazon account and use the AI shopping assistant to shop for products like yours, this way you will get a good idea of which products are coming up and what questions you need to answer in your listings.

Amazon will scan your title, bullets, A+ content, reviews, product attributes and Q&A section for information about your product to try and answer questions that pet parents are asking on Rufus. Due to this, it’s now become more important than ever to have extensive information about your product on your Amazon listings.

Product Example - Dog Leads

Amazon Rufus leather and synthetic dog leads
Amazon Rufus benefits of synthetic dog leads

Here I asked the question: ‘Which is better, leather or synthetic dog leads?’

Rufus then proceeded to give me bullet point examples of the advantages of leather and synthetic dog leads. This then led to examples of both products that I could potentially purchase.

When you click on the individual product listings like this one: Joytale Leather Dog Lead it includes information about the advantages of leather dog leads. It also has an A+ section that includes frequently asked questions talking specifically about leather.

Amazon Rufus Q&A section

You will also see on the left here that when you click on a specific product, Rufus comes up with a list of suggested questions.

For this product the questions were:

  • Is it made of real leather?

  • Does it come in other colours?

  • Can it be used for training?

  • Is the handle comfortable?

These are important to take into account when you write the content for your listing.

The Importance of the Q&A Section in Your Listings

Amazon Rufus Q&A Section

The Q&A section of your listing is where customers can search for the answers to specific questions that other customers have asked. Rufus does index this section so it’s important to make sure you answer any customer questions that come your way.

One way of being proactive with this is to get customers to ask questions that you know you want to be in this section and then answer them.

Example Question: ‘Can This Dog Lead be Used for Training?’

Example Answer: ‘Yes, this leather dog lead is made from strong and durable leather with a sturdy brass clip and is perfect for training or polishing skills.’

Product Example - Dog Food

Amazon Rufus best dog food for whippets

In this example I had the search query: ‘What is the best dog food for a whippet?’

Rufus then proceeded to recommend different dog foods, some of which were formulated specifically for greyhounds, which of course makes sense. However it also recommended some general dog foods.

Amazon Rufus General Dog Food Questions

Pooch & Mutt is formulated for all dog breeds and this is very clear throughout their content, which was picked up by Rufus. You can also see on the left hand side Rufus came up with some suggested questions about the dog food, again these are important questions to consider when writing your content.

  • What are the main ingredients?

  • Does it contain artificial preservatives?

  • Does it help with digestion?

  • Is it hypoallergenic?

  • Is this food for all dog breeds?

Are You Ready to Tackle Amazon Rufus in 2026?

Amazon’s generative AI shopping assistant has revolutionised the way pet parents can find potential products on Amazon. Although Amazon Rufus will not replace the traditional Amazon Search Box, it is becoming more popular in the UK as a way to find pet products. If you’re a pet business that sells your products on Amazon, it’s important to make sure your Amazon pet listings are up to date and stay ahead of the curve.
